YMQ & MWQ QUILTING RETREAT

Writer: Julius Rempe-NightJulius Rempe-Night

Last week, I had the awesome opportunity to dive into my first-ever quilting retreat, and let me tell you, it was a blast! This wasn’t just any ol’ gathering of quilters; it was also a fundraiser, supporting the Salvation Army. I can’t even begin to describe how amazing it was. Seriously, my first retreat and it was everything I hoped for and more!

I joined about 28 other quilters, each with their own cool stories and skills to share. The whole retreat was super well-organized, and everything went off without a hitch. It created this awesome vibe of togetherness and creativity that made it even more special.

Were at a beautiful Salvation Army summer camp in the mountains of Jasper GA, which was just perfect for our quilting adventure! The camp had great rooms where we could kick back and feel right at home. We did all our sewing in a huge dining hall that was big enough for our group and had a really inviting atmosphere. Honestly, I showed up with no expectations, just a mix of excitement and curiosity, and I was blown away by how great everything was. The hall was buzzing with the sound of sewing machines, laughter, and the crinkle of fabric as we all worked on our projects. It was the perfect blend of focus and fun!

I was a bit nervous but super excited to be there as a teacher! I got to teach a small class on Foundation Paper Piecing Design where we all made star patterns using just paper. It was a new experience for me since I hadn't taught design like that before, but I had a blast!

It was awesome watching everyone dive in and try out different ways to create the star block.

I also showed small groups how to sew FPP so they could make their star blocks. A lot of them had never tried FPP before and were really thankful for the chance to learn! Some chose not to work on the star and used what they learned to sew other blocks instead :) it was awesome to watch!

I loved meeting everyone and watching their creativity shine! I can't wait for the next retreat! I can definitely see myself getting hooked on this :)
